RULES AND ETIQUETTE
RENSHI GREG GYSIN PROFILE

rules and Etiquette

  1. When entering or leaving the Dojo, come to attention facing the Dojo and bow. This signifies respect for the place in which you train.

  2. Once a student has his/her Gi on and belt tied, he should seek out all Black belts and Sensei's and bow,  acknowledging their presence.  A student with a correct attitude will put aside ego and humble himself before others. This is the mark of a true warrior.

  3. A student should never question an instruction unless asked to speak on the matter. Questions can be asked after class, when there is more time for better explanation to your questions.

  4. Swearing, bad behaviour and lack of respect to anyone, regardless of rank, will not be tolerated.

  5. Gi shall be clean at all times. Jewellery/watches shall be removed. Both fingers and toenails must be cut short for the protection of others. Student's appearance should be one of cleanliness and neatness. Lack of personal cleanliness signifies a lack of self respect.

  6. If, for any reason, you are late for class then you are to go to the rear of the class and sit in seiza position and wait with patience to be admitted to the class by the Sensei then bow and move in to the rear of the class to start training.

  7. When Sensei talks to you, or issues you a task, you are to quickly reply "hai". This is to acknowledge that you understand. Then continue with your training. Failure to do this would be taken by your Sensei that you do not understand or that there is a problem.

  8. Upon approaching a higher rank, bow before talking. When you have finished the conversation bow again before leaving.

  9. No shoes to be worn in the dojo training area or at any time on the mats.

  10. Do not eat, chew gum or smoke in the Dojo.

  11. Address Instructors as "Renshi" or "Sensei" Never address Instructors by their first name during class.

  12. If you are a higher rank or Black belt, remember that this is not your entitlement for bad manners or bad attitude. Students will look up to you. They will emulate what you do. There is a saying - "A Black belt is merely a confirmed student". As a Black belt you will be expected to be a role model.
